2026: The International Year of the Woman Farmer
In 2026, the United Nations designated the year as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, recognizing the essential role women play in agriculture, food security, and sustainable farming worldwide. This global dedication honors women who work the land, grow food, and protect farming traditions… often while balancing limited resources and recognition.
Why It Matters
According to the United Nations, women make up nearly 43% of the global agricultural workforce. In the United States, women farmers are increasingly leading small farms, organic agriculture, and regenerative farming practices. Their work strengthens local food systems, supports biodiversity, and helps preserve farmland for future generations.
A Woman-Owned Farm in Virginia
Here at Virginia Elderberry, we’re proud to be woman owned and operated. Inspired by global efforts like the International Year of the Woman Farmer, we celebrate the work of women across agriculture, especially right here in Virginia, where thousands of women farmers contribute to local and regional food systems.
Our farm manager, Jean Jarrell, is hands-on in every aspect of farm life at Whispering Meadow Farm. Jean spends her time:
- Preparing and pruning elderberry fields for each season
-
Monitoring soil and plant health for exceptional organic yields
-
Hand-picking elderberries at peak ripeness
-
Processing the fruit into organic elderberry juices, teas, and wellness products
-
Tending gardens, hilltops, and all fields with care
Supporting Local and Global Women Farmers
As we celebrate the International Year of the Woman Farmer, we support women like Jean, whose dedication, knowledge, and hard work are infused into every Virginia Elderberry product. Supporting woman-owned farms in Virginia means supporting sustainable agriculture, local communities, and the future of farming.
