April Showers Bring May Flowers

As April showers retreat and May flowers bloom, nature orchestrates a mesmerizing transformation, painting the world in vibrant hues. Amidst this floral symphony, one bloom stands out for its delicate charm and versatile uses — the elderflower.

The elder flowers at Whispering Meadow Farm in Etlan, VA are beginning to bloom! Etlan received 1.93 inches of rain during the month of April, an average of 0.06 inches per day - a generous amount of precipitation for the elder plants. The preparation of rain in April followed by May’s rays of sunshine brought forth the first sightings of elderflower buds this season! The bushes will soon enough become embellished with clusters of tiny, five-petaled flowers with creamy-white blossoms, that form elegant collections atop slender green stems. Their grace does not stop there! They obtain a fragrance that is subtle yet enchanting, reminiscent of a blend of honey and citrus, and inviting for an admiration for its dainty beauty. Their look of purity blended with a delightful aroma presents such a delicate charm to our land.

Farm Manager, Jean stops by the elderflower fields daily to execute a general inspection of the gentle orchard. She checks for harsh damage from pests like deer and minuscule bugs and aims to prevent any other unexpected troubles. In contrast to examining for damages Jean also checks for evolving growth! This is every farmer’s favorite time of year as the month of May produces green buds symbolizing a significant first step of success.

As we savor the sensory delights of spring, let us admire the humble elderflower—a botanical gem that transcends seasons, cultures, and culinary traditions. With its delicate blooms and endless uses, the elderflower represents the essence of April showers brings May flowers — a testament to nature's enduring grace and splendor.
